Getting to Koh Phangan

There's no airport on Koh Phangan โ€” you arrive by ferry. Three main routes, depending on whether you're optimising for speed, budget or island-hopping.

Fastest

1 ยท Via Koh Samui

Fly + short ferry โ€” the most common route.

  1. Fly into Koh Samui (USM) โ€” direct from Bangkok, plus regional hubs.
  2. Taxi to Nathon or Maenam pier (20โ€“40 min).
  3. Ferry to Thong Sala, Koh Phangan (~30โ€“45 min).

Best for: arriving fast and fuss-free. Trade-off: Samui flights cost more.

Cheapest

2 ยท Via Surat Thani

Bus / train / budget flight + ferry โ€” the backpacker route from Bangkok.

  1. Reach Surat Thani by overnight bus or train from Bangkok, or a cheap flight.
  2. Transfer to Donsak pier (usually included in combined tickets).
  3. Ferry to Thong Sala (~1.5โ€“2.5 hrs).

Best for: tight budgets and the classic overnight-from-Bangkok run. Trade-off: long total travel time.

Island-hop

3 ยท Via Koh Tao

For anyone already diving or beach-hopping in the gulf.

  1. From Koh Tao, take the catamaran south.
  2. Direct ferry to Thong Sala (~1โ€“1.5 hrs).
  3. Easy to chain Koh Tao โ†’ Koh Phangan โ†’ Koh Samui in one trip.

Best for: combining the dive scene on Koh Tao with the party. Trade-off: seas can be rough in monsoon season.

Once you land at Thong Sala

Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main pier and town. From there it's a songthaew (shared pick-up taxi) or taxi to your accommodation โ€” roughly 15โ€“20 min to Ban Tai and 25โ€“35 min over the hill to Haad Rin. Agree the fare before you get in, and expect surge pricing right around full-moon dates.
